KATA - BROWN BELT

Kata is a key part of your karate journey and for brown belt there are three katas you will experience.  As a training aid, each of these kata's have been captured below for your reference.  The number of moves for each kata has been obtained from Kanazawa's kata books.  Over a thousand generations could live in you now...



TEKKI SHODAN
(IRON HORSE FIRST LEVEL)

Tekki Shodan, is the first kata in the Tekki series and is also the first kata that does not start in the traditional yoi position and emphasises strong and powerful techniques. There are 25 moves in this kata.


BASSAI DAI
(STORMING THE FORTRESS - MAJOR)

Bassai Dai, meaning that one must exhibit the power and spirit required to break through an enemy's castle.  This is particularly evident in the kata's first movement, when the karateka launches forward with soete-uchi-uke.  There are 42 moves in Bassai Dai.


KANKU DAI
(VIEWING THE SKY - MAJOR)

Kanku Dai, having 65 movements, Kanku Dai is the longest kata in the Shotokan syllabus. Kanku translates as "Looking at the Sky" or "Viewing the Sky," referring to the kata's opening sequence. Kanku Dai is an amalgamation of the Heian and Tekki kata.  It is common to mistakenly start with Kanku Dai but move into a previous kata in error.

  

About ESKA

The English Shotokan Karate Association, better known as ESKA, is a renowned Karate association with clubs in Herts, Beds, Cambs and Essex. 

ESKA was founded in 1979 by Sensei's Eddie Witcher, Michael Randall, John Van Weenen, Michael Nursey, Roger Hall, Harry Jones and Greg Durant.

Hanshi Nursey (9th Dan) Chief Instructor of ESKA teaches the senior class at the Stevenage Honbu.  ESKA's many clubs are run by Senior Dan Grades (up to 7th Dan).

The Stevenage club was opened in 1976 by Hanshi Michael Nursey who still runs the higher grade class on a Monday 19:30 - 20:30.

The main club 18:30 - 19:30 is now run by Sensei Graham Fountain 2nd Dan.
